A dog showing anti-social behavior is easy to identify. Knowing how to resolve the problem and investing the bard work required is more difficult and usually involves specialist help and support. There are various approaches to canine behavioral problems that we can take, including: 1. Live with the problem. Many people do this. If the problem is minor and not affecting either you, the dog, or other people, it may be easier to live with it than to invest effort to resolve it.

2. Control. This approach means that you must always be one step ahead of your dog. It can be effective if you never make a mistake. However, be aware of what your dog is learning, as the problem behavior could be worsening.

Example: Jackie's dog Poppy did not like visitors. Jackie found it easier simply to keep Poppy out of the way when people came. It seemed to work in the short term, but Poppy's behavior became increasingly anti-social. On the one occasion when the door was not closed properly, Poppy ran in and bit Jackie's friend. Jackie found that because she had been shut away, Poppy was more likely to bark at people, and would not let anyone near her.

3. Training. This means teaching your dog to do something different.

Train your dog to sit and stay in a specific place - that way he will not be able to bark at visitors. Similarly, you can teach him to do a down stay, so that he cannot lunge at another dog. But remember that although these things can certainly help, there may be difficulties. Often, the dog's motivation to misbehave is far stronger than the motivation to obey. Ignoring this behavior may also be incompatible with a dog's natural instincts. for example, the dog who barks at other dogs may be afraid and so to lie down would be very stressful for him.

For example, a dog will not try to keep visitors away if he finds it is in his best interests for them to arrive because they bring him food treats or play games with him. Therefore he has no reason to be territorial or unfriendly to visitors.

4. Behavior. This approach looks at why a dog is misbehaving and what can be done to make him want to do the right thing.

5. Combination approach. This is probably the most effective and practical. If a dog is barking aggressively at visitors, methods of control are essential in the short term.

Improved response to owners' commands will help, along with teaching the dog to want people to visit in controlled situations. This, and the realisation that we may always need to take care with this dog in these circumstances, will result in a situation where everyone is happy. The appropriate cure will vary for each dog.
